Be the ‘Most Prepared Patient Ever!’ – part 2
On my ever-growing number of lists, I wanted to ensure I had a tick list so as I packed my hospital bag for my mastectomy and reconstruction surgery, I was confident I would have everything I needed. If you don’t have time to make a list, or someone else is packing for you – then here is everything you will need to make your hospital stay and immediate post-surgery recovery as comfortable as possible:
Hospital Bag for Mastectomy
- Loose fitting button up shirts– you’ll have drains in and need easy access to your new boobies, I took two and wore them both.
- Leggings or stretchy trousers
- Button up Pyjamas – my partner treated me to some gorgeous new ones from Chelsea Peers, but I saved these for home so that no mishaps/fluids ruined them!
- Slippers with rubber grip soles
- Slip on shoes – no laces or boots!
- Comfy underwear
- Surgical Bras
- Drains bags – my hospital had volunteers make these, which was really lovely, but I packed them not knowing this.
- Period Knickers – I didn’t end up needing them thank God! But as a more comfortable and changeable alternative to other period products, the reusable underwear is definitely a winner!
- Dressing gown
- V pillow – get someone to bring this for you after you have come out of recovery.
- Neck Pillow – trust me on this one!
- Mastectomy Pillow – great for extra cushioning in the car too.
- Body Wipes
- Natural Lip Balm
- Moisturiser/face wash (organic)
- Electric Toothbrush – you’ll be surprised how much easier an electric one is when your movement is limited!
- Toothpaste
- Hairbrush with long handle – no tangle teasers!
- Soft Headband
- Eye mask
- Headphones/Airpods – to mute out the hospital noises and help you sleep!
- Charger for your phone with long lead
- Snacks
- Water bottle with straw
- Electrolyte Sachets
Now it might seem like a lot of things, but I actually used everything on this list during my stay in hospital. As my surgery was later in the evening (6pm-10pm), I ended up staying for 2 nights before I was discharged. So I was grateful to have all of these things at my disposal during my hospital stay.
